 Capacity Building
UNEP SBCI DELIVERING 'SUSHI'
Sustainable Urban Housing Initiative The Sustainable Social Housing Initiative (SUSHI) - will bring sustainable building practices to social housing programmes in Bangkok, Thailand and Sao Paulo, Brazil. SUSHI will develop and verify an approach for how to ensure that social housing programmes include design criteria and construction practices that support sustainable building principles.
Main project outputs will be:
- Methodology and tools for identifying and implementing opportunities for enhancing sustainable features in social housing programs. including template for action plans and tools for analysis of local technology supply, market demand and policy impact.
- Inclusion of sustainable building features in 2-4 sustainable housing projects (project test cases) with quantified assessment of life cycle impact on resource efficiency
- Local capacity building in Bangkok and Sao Paulo for disseminating the sustainable buildings approach to other projects/locations
SPOD – Sustainable Building Policies for Developing Countries
This project builds on the work done jointly by the Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative (SBCI) and the Finland-led Marrakech Task Force on Sustainable Buildings and Construction (MTF). In particular it takes stock of the joint SBCI-MTF report “Buildings and Climate Change: Status, Challenges and Opportunities”(February 2007), the MTF Policy Recommendations to the Commission on Sustainable Development (May 2007), and the SBCI database on policy tools for energy efficiency in buildings (September 2007)
Process
The project aims to assist governments at national and local levels to develop policy tools in support of mainstreaming sustainable construction and buildings approaches. The project is to be implemented with field tests in Southern Africa, with possible extensions or parallel projects other countries. SPoD will compose three core activities:
- Provide a ‘Quick-Scan’ tool (now on-line for review);
- Develop policy building blocks.
- Perform field tests of the Quick -Scan tool and the policy building blocks at two locations in developing countries.
- Design and implement an innovative dissemination strategy of project outputs, making full use of the SBCI and MTF networks
This project will be implemented in 2009.
